Overview

    This issue features a special issue on piracy in South East Asia: Myth Versus Reality. The publication looks at the following key issues:

    • Counter piracy strategies in South East Asia;
    • Piracy and armed sea robbery: Group dynamics and geographical patterns;
    • Hijackings in the southern South China Sea;
    • Forecasting and trends for coping with piracy in South East Asia.

As this last article underscores:

Piracy and armed sea robbery within the Singapore/Malacca Strait as well as in the South China Sea is well organized and beyond the purely opportunistic robbers. The threat to shipping varies; local hijackings are very much like murders or sexual assaults – they are typically committed by someone close, such as family or associates. The robbery of vessels off the Anambas is more random and varies primarily on when they are operating in-theatre with a mother ship and what targets are available.

There have been several clusters of incidents in piracy in the South East Asia area; and counter-piracy efforts are significant as well. The area provides an interesting case study into global challenges and trends in piracy and counter-piracy efforts.
